A celebration of our accomplishments

Ensuring your ability to practice

  • AAPA assisted the Missouri and Delaware state chapters in planning their legislative campaigns and continues to work with the Ohio and Indiana state PA associations to authorize physician-delegated prescriptive authority.
  • AAPA identified a PA to serve on the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Task Force on Medication Management. PAs are also represented on the JCAHO Credentialing and Privileging Expert Panel, Task Force on Sedation and Anesthesia, and Hospital Professional and Technical Advisory Committee.

“The philanthropic arm of our profession adds balance and a different perspective of medicine. The PA Foundation engenders the feel-good part of the profession that is at the core of what we value.” – Rebecca Pinto, PA-C

Building a more positive reimbursement environment

  • AAPA partnered with the American Medical Association and other physician organizations working with Congress and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to prevent a 4.3% decrease in Medicare payments next year. The coalition seeks a permanent fix to the physician fee schedule.
  • AAPA assisted PAs in Hawaii in their efforts to be included as health care professionals in the state Medicaid program. The Hawaii Department of Medicaid reports that they filed a request with CMS to include PAs and expects approval of the request in September.
  • AAPA is helping key senators push for legislation that will authorize PAs to sign Medicare home health plans of care.

“I am very proud and grateful to be a member of AAPA. Thanks for the wonderful years of helping me evolve as a physician assistant.” – Tricia Arnold Howard, PA-C

Helping you learn more to do more through CME

  • AAPA continues to add titles to the Topic-Specific CME series as state licensing boards mandate new categories of CME for license renewal. This is a benefit for AAPA fellow members only and for those current student members who are applying for licensure in a state that requires documentation of specific CME credits for initial licensure.
  • AAPA partnered with MedCases to offer nearly 100 case-based learning opportunities to be completed online anytime. This program is available to AAPA members only.

PAs helping others through philanthropy

  • The PA Foundation received two new endowments this past spring—a $50,000 Procter & Gamble Endowed Scholarship Fund and a $100,000 Robert K. Pedersen Global Outreach Endowment Fund.
  • The Foundation brought to a close its Silver Anniversary campaign in recognition of its 25th anniversary. Campaign funds were used to provide grants to seven national and international humanitarian projects.
  • Matching PA and student donations, the PA Foundation contributed more than $19,000 to the tsunami relief effort.

National Physician Assistant Week, October 6-12

October 6 is special day for the PA profession. On this day in 1967, the first physician assistants graduated from Duke University. In commemoration of the beginning of the profession, many constituent organizations and individual PAs host community activities and public information programs throughout October. State and local government officials can participate as well by issuing proclamations and statements of support for the PA profession. For additional information, go to www.aapa.org.
