The US Census Bureau estimates that the adult female population in the United States will increase by more than 50% between 2000 and 2050. PAs in obstetrics and gynecology will play an ever increasing role in delivering medical care to this segment of the population.
- PAs handled nearly 8 million patient visits for osteoporosis in 2005, according to AAPA estimates. By 2020, the Surgeon General's office predicts that one in two Americans older than 50 years will be at risk for fractures from osteoporosis or low bone mass. To learn more about the patient visit data collected by AAPA, visit the Academy's data and statistics Web page at www.aapa.org/research.
- Healthy People 2010 is the prevention agenda for the nation. AAPA is an active supporter of this campaign and is working to educate PAs about the agenda and ways to educate their patients to lead healthier lifestyles. One way the Academy is reaching out to the PA community is through CME presentations. To register for the 2006 AAPA Annual PA Conference, go to http://www.aapa.org/annual-conf.
Association of Physician Assistants in Obstetrics and Gynecology (APAOG)
APAOG is the official constituent organization of the AAPA representing PAs in the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology. The mission of APAOG is to enhance health care for women by supporting physician-PA teams with a network of communication and education between providers dedicated to women's health.
- Founded in 1991, APAOG is the sole professional association devoted exclusively to PAs who provide cost-effective, quality health care to women. The organization strives to be an authoritative resource on the latest developments, CME opportunities, and postgraduate education, as well as on practice issues and legislative changes.
- Members enjoy these benefits along with a directory, a quarterly newsletter, and access to a dynamic Web site. APAOG also provides members with representation to other large governing organizations such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, and the AAPA House of Delegates. It is an exciting time for APAOG, as we are establishing an alliance with the North American Menopause Society and we have created a Women's Health Research Grant Award. These are just a few of the benefits of membership!

PAs in occupational medicine deliver employee health services in diverse settings—corporate medical offices, private physicians' offices, hospital employee health departments, remote pipeline locations, military bases, and even the White House.
- Current restrictions limiting PA ability to provide care to federal workers who are injured on the job can unnecessarily limit patient access to quality medical care. AAPA was represented before a congressional hearing this year as part of its ongoing effort to overturn these restrictions. To read the complete testimony, go to http://www.aapa.org/gandp/testimony/FECA.htm.
- AAPA is working with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and AAPA-OM to ensure that PAs are involved in FMCSA's development of a registry of certified medical examiners. FMCSA plans to train, test, and register health care professionals who perform physicals on interstate truck and motor coach drivers.
- The AAPA reimbursement staff annually surveys each state workers' compensation program to stay abreast of any policy changes that may affect services provided by PAs. To check on your state workers' compensation program, visit www.aapa.org/members/gandp/workcomp.html.
